Tonight Detroit based power duo Adult. (yes, it’s written with a period at the end) will premier their new album Detroit House of Guests with a show at Gramps. The new album, out on Mute Records, features collaborations with many talented musicians, including Douglas J McCarthy (founding member of Nitzer Ebb), Michael Gira (Swans / Angels of Light), Shannon Funchess (Light Asylum), Robert Aiki Aubrey Lowe, Austrian thereminist Dorit Chrysler, and multidisciplinary artist Lun*na Menoh.
The concept behind this new album is very particular. The band invited each musician to their house for a period of 3 weeks, where they would record the songs for the album as the result of the experience of living all together.
Quoting the album’s manifesto:
“Let us take the intensity of the studio session and drop it into the home. If the “avant-garde” is thought to be un-domestic then what impact does this domestic situation have on the shape and sound of our project? Can the radical even exist inside the domestic? It’s so private in the home. How vulnerable are we? Are the shades down and the curtains drawn? Can we become out of order? A rug turned at a slight angle, resisting not to straighten it as you pass by. The merger of soft and dark sides, melodic voices and angular jabs, organic and pre-programmed, dinner parties and carry out. A dislocated and disjointed dance.”
We had the pleasure of interviewing Nicola Kuperus and Adam Lee Miller founders of Adult. for our Too Much Love radio show on Jolt Radio. If you missed it (or want to listen to it again) you can stream it below.
